Basic Registration

Applies to small businesses with annual turnover up to ₹12 lakh, such as petty retailers, hawkers, home-based food makers, and small cafes. Use Form A for application; it’s the simplest and quickest option.

State License

Required for medium-sized FBOs with turnover from ₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore, including restaurants, mid-level manufacturers, distributors, and caterers operating within one state. Apply via Form B; may involve premises inspection.

Central License

Mandatory for large businesses exceeding ₹20 crore turnover, plus importers, exporters, multi-state operators, airports/ports, and e-commerce platforms. Also uses Form B but issued by central authority with stricter oversigh

PENELATIES

Operating without an FSSAI license in India is a serious violation under Section 63 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It carries imprisonment up to 6 months and a fine up to ₹5 lakh.

Key Penalties

  • Primary Punishment: Mandatory for all food business operators (FBOs) not exempt under Section 31(2); applies to manufacturing, selling, storing, distributing, or importing food without proper registration/license.
  • Repeat Offenses: Higher fines, daily penalties, license suspension, or cancellation under Sections 64–66; company directors/managers can be personally liable.
